3D Printing Case Study: Car Camera

Our client is a supplier of car cameras for private hire companies.

However, there is one problem with the original design – the SD card can be easily removed. To prevent any possible tampering of the SD card, our client required us to redesign a camera cap.

Step 1: 3D Designing

We need to first 3D Design a new camera cap that is enclosed and will not allow easy tampering of the SD card.

Step 2: 3D Printing

After confirming the 3D design with the client, we can proceed to 3D print the new camera cap. For cost effectiveness, we decided to 3D print the new cap with FDM technology, using black PLA material.

Step 3: Fitting Cap

Finally, we need to fit the new cap to the car camera. This is a trial and error process, and includes revisiting of steps 1 and 2 to get the perfect fit for our client. 

Redesigning Cap

After 3D designing, we produced a prototype of the new camera cap for the client’s review before committing to mass production. 

The new cap has two holes to tap in the screws and is enclosed, preventing misuse of the SD card.

Final Product

After our client is satisfied with the design, we produced the cap in large quantity and assembled the parts together.
