PLA/PLA PLUS filament is one of the two most commonly used filaments for 3D printing, alongside ABS. Many consider it to be easy to use.
Packaging, especially in terms of food, often require the use of PLA as it is appropriate for food contact. Other than packaging, the material can also produce bags, disposable tableware, upholstery, disposable garments, hygiene products and even diapers. Therefore, PLA is a safe material to use.
PLA PLUS filament is also an eco-friendly option, as it is a vegetable-based plastic material which commonly uses cornstarch as a raw material. PLA is a fully biodegradable thermoplastic polymer consisting of renewable raw materials. It is an odorless filament. However, interestingly, many have reported that PLA does emit a slight odor, best described as sweet corn, pancakes or maple syrup – but it does not emit fumes like heated ABS.
In contrast to ABS, PLA tends to be less durable, more fragile, and more sensitive to heat than ABS. Its melting point is also relatively low at 150ºC. However, when cooling, this material contracts less than ABS. This makes it more resistant to warping and gives it good geometric stability during manufacturing. Hence, PLA is generally preferred for rapid prototyping where form is more critical than function.
